  I first visited Kim Slava (aka Doctor Sax) and his shop in back in early 2007. I was discouraged with the long wait and poor service at the big box instrument repair centers, so I took my Buffet R-13 clarinet in for a few new pads and a tuneup. Kim struck me as a knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating woodwind repair specialist, who genuinely had a passion for both vintage and new woodwinds, and was always quick with a great jazz/music story and a joke. Kim has kept me bringing back my slew of horns, including bari, tenor, alto, and soprano saxes, clarinets, and the odd trumpet or two. His attention to detail and professional manner are great, Doctor Sax Woodwinds also has a great "Greenwich Village' feel to the shop, a place where one is free to try mouthpieces, take lessons from local sax pros, and also talk about horns and gear. I have bought and sold more horns with Kim than I care to admit......he even recently sold and shipped me a backup tenor sax to the Caribbean where I now work. It doesn't hurt either that Kim has one heck of a new and used woodwind mouthpiece selection, as well as a ton of music accessories and one of the largest and cheapest reed inventories in SE Wisconsin....I will guarantee you that if you visit, you'll be a regular customer!
